I was able to provide Claude with 2 images from a Statement of Work, and it built out 2 detailed Smartsheet project plan sheets while I finished reading the document. This was a huge time savings of having to recreate it manually, and it even asked me questions to better align milestones and dependencies that had not been called out explicitly in the graphics.

They both have helped me with formulas (outside of Smartsheet's AI) and have helped me build multiple Project Plans, and various Production Solutions for my teams. I am looking forward to integrating them actually with Smartsheet!

I have been using the Claude MCP connector with Smartsheet since before the wider announcement and wanted to share some honest hands-on observations. I am also currently helping a few clients explore MCP adoption, so these learnings are coming from both personal builds and early client conversations.

What worked well.

I built a live FIFA World Cup 2026 tracker through conversation with Claude. Two sheets, 104 rows, 14 columns, all 48 teams across 12 groups. Setup that would have taken hours of manual configuration took under 20 minutes. Bulk corrections across all 104 rows, time zone fixes, team name standardization, all handled through natural language. The cross-object reach was also a genuine surprise. Not just sheets but reports, dashboards, discussions and the attachment layer are all addressable through conversation.

What to know before you start.

Read the bulk changes guide before touching any live data. The API has no native undo. The Sample-of-one and Filter-then-confirm patterns in the documentation are essential, not optional. Response verbosity is also worth understanding at scale. Every write operation returns the full row data. Filter before you read and test before you batch.

The architecture that worked best.

MCP for build and setup. Power Automate for unattended runtime. Smartsheet as the single source of truth. Each tool doing what it does best.

I tried Claude MCP just today and it work quite well to update some of my sheets by adding colums automatically by comparing with a model sheet.

But, I wanted to update sheet summary too and was disapointed when i learnt it was not included in the mcp connexion.

I hope it will be soon.

We are creating the plan on connecting to Copilot. I cannot wait for this, the amount of time saved is going to help the PM team greatly. Also knowing we could possibly have the PM team run an extra project without adding resources to the team is a game changer.

I've rebuilt selected Bridge workflows using the Claude MCP, such as duplicating rows based on a single form entry and indenting them beneath the parent. Sadly, you're not yet able to trigger such an automation directly from a new row event, so it has to be scheduled instead. Copilot MCP is a little more complex as you have to set up the agent first. The best thing I've found so far is creating HTML dashboards in Claude, which are miles better than Smartsheet's visually and offer full slice and dice capabilities.

To date, using any AI tools to build anything other than a simple sheet is a no-go. The tools can't access the features necessary to do anything meaningful. I suspect this is what @Paul Newcome is alluding to.

Question about MCP in SmartSheet vs using SS in our own MCP:

We are getting ready to build out our own MCP server to use AI tools (ie..Claude) with our SharePoint, SmartSheet and any other application we want to add via API connectors. The reason for using the MCP server is to have a secure environment that is not used by to train AI and
guard our client data. That being said, we are required to get an Enterprise Claude subscription that has more of the security guardrails.
How will using a Claude in SmartSheet's MCP server differ as far as security is concerned. Will we need to get an Enterprise Claude subscription to address the security concerns?

Hi @LSwan, Great question. I think there are really two separate questions here: the MCP side and the Claude side.

1. What does building your own MCP server actually give you?

Whether you use Smartsheet's MCP server or build your own, the MCP layer controls:

What systems Claude can access.
What data gets exposed to the model.
What can be filtered, masked, or redacted.
What gets logged for audit purposes.

This is where I see the biggest security benefit of rolling your own MCP server, especially if you're connecting SharePoint, Smartsheet, and other systems. You can decide exactly what data reaches the model instead of sending everything.

2. Do you still need Enterprise Claude?

In my view, yes, if your requirement is "client data must not be used for training and we want those commitments contractually."

Your MCP server controls what Claude sees. Your Claude subscription governs what happens to that data once it reaches the model. They solve different problems.

A quick real world tie in from my testing: in the FIFA World Cup tracker I mentioned in my original post, the MCP server never determined whether Anthropic could train on that data. The MCP layer controlled access to the data, while the Claude account terms governed how that data could be handled afterward. Two different guardrails.

A few practical observations from using the Smartsheet MCP server

Access follows the authenticated user's permissions.
OAuth is preferable to PATs, since PATs inherit all permissions of that user.
I'd strongly recommend requiring approval for write operations because the Smartsheet API has no native undo.
At scale, payload size matters. Every write returns full row data, so filtering before reading becomes important.

One thing I've found interesting: a few of my own clients have said they are not allowing Claude, but when I asked why, they often didn't have a specific concern beyond general AI caution. That's why I think it's important to separate training concerns from access and governance concerns. They're related, but they're not the same thing.

Personally, after using MCP quite a bit, my biggest questions are no longer: "Will the model train on my data?"

They are:
"Am I sending the model more data than it actually needs?"
"Are attachments, discussions, or sensitive fields being exposed unnecessarily?"
"Can someone accidentally trigger a large update without proper controls?"

That's where a custom MCP server can add a lot of value.

Hope that helps, and I would be interested to hear how your architecture evolves. This space is moving fast, and we are all learning as we go.
