Mark complete and turn off notification

I have due dates for various steps in the project and the client receives a notification on those due dates. Often, the client will complete the task before the due date and it causes confusion when they receive the notification after already completing the task. I want to be able to mark that particular task complete and disable the notification. Can this be done?
