Workday formula helper column

Hello,
I need to trigger notifications based on workdays. If I create a helper column using the WORKDAY formula, what do I base the # of days on?
Example: Notification to be triggered 3 days ahead of deadline which falls on a Monday. Notification would need to be sent that previous Thursday, not Saturday.

You would use the WORKDAY function and use negative numbers to output a date prior to the starting date.
