Can a duration column with dependencies not pull data from a created date column?

I have a sheet with a created date that is generated by the system upon submission of the project. I wanted to create a column that tracks the duration of the project from submission to delivery with dependencies, but when I click the drop-down under project settings it doesn't have that created date listed. Is there a way to make this work with that column, or do I need a manually entered date field?
