How do you limit items in a dropdown menu field based on the selection of another?

We're building a process where users are limited to a secondary dropdown menu selection after selecting an option from another dropdown field. For example:

We have a Job Department field and a Job Type field. If the Job Department dropdown menu includes Accounting, HR, IT, etc., we want the Job Type field to be limited to only jobs related to the Department selected.

Can this be done using a helper column or a separate sheet/table?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

You could do this with a form within the sheet. Forms have conditional logic built into them for this type of situation.

Sorry, I should have clarified that I knew the form logic. But, is there any way to do this in the sheet/grid?

  • Hello,

I'm also curious if this is possible, with a similar issue with Functional Group & Subgroups. Is there a way to apply this sort of logic to a Sheet rather than in a Form? Perhaps through a formula?

    Please let me know.

can smart sheets dropdown be used similarly to shopping for car accessories?

select the year in a drop-down box, which limits which manufacturers are available in the next drop-down.

selecting manufacture limits the next drop-down to only car models under specific manufacturers.

selecting a car model would limit the next drop-down to a specific model trim.

Selecting a specific trim would bring out accessories available for that trim only.
