is it possible to create an auto-number column using a formula? not using an auto-number column type

The reason I ask is the master sheet we are using already contains an auto number column and we are importing data from another sheet that has an auto-number column which is used in other sheets & need to keep these numberings separate ideally.

So if possible a formula that will assign a number to a row based on a condition i.e if lead team is x then assign a number in another column

Can you share a screenshot please?

To add an auto number if the rows are added at the top of the sheet, you can do 1+the cell under it. if you drag the formula into a few rows it will also populate the new rows that are entered.
