Add the Row() Function

Please add the Row() Function. Not having that has been a huge headache for me over the last few weeks.

Reason: It would probably be easier than adding vlookup, and If I can reference the row number, I can tell something to always post at the top of the page which means I can have summary math on the same page as my information that is being updated. There are a lot of other features that could be added that would allow me to do the same thing, such as a special column that automatically has the correct row number in it (not auto-number, if a row is added at the top it inputs the highest number into that), I already mentioned V-Lookup/using math to reference other pages, giving the ability to have web pages update to the top of a selected row rather than row 1, giving the ability to only update part of rows with webforms and I'm sure that there are many other ways it can be done.

  • Hi Luke,

    I think a ROW() function would be great if it can be used in conjunction with a column reference somehow to create a cell reference. I resort to using PARENT(), CHILDREN(), and on occasion ANCESTORS() to get data from certain cells, but that means I have to organize them into a hierarchical structure that allows those functions to work.

    Please submit your enhancement request via the Product Enhancement Request form under Quick links to the right to ensure that our Product team sees the demand for this function.

    Luke_TK,

    I don't quite follow your examples, but I think  I understand what you are looking for.

    The problem and solution that I outline here:

    http://ronin-global.com/2017/01/09/smartsheet-referencing-a-cell-that-doesnt-exist-yet/

    has concepts that may lead to some of what you are looking for.

    There are also solutions to update existing rows with Smartsheet's Forms (using Zapier www.zapier.com or the API), and many of my cross-sheet lookups have solutions with the existing tool set.

    If you have headaches, contact Richard Rymill at Smarter Business Processes (richardr@smarterbusinessprocesses.com). I work with him to offer one-on-one mentoring and dedicated problem solving. Last week a customer needed 15 minutes of my time to solve something she had been struggling with for a day and a half, and she's a pretty experienced user.

    Craig
