Autonumber column keeps changing to previous starting number

Not sure if sorting a sheet is causing this, but the starting number for a column continually changes to a previous start number. For example. The starting number should be 071, but somehow it is showing to start at 059.

Any suggestions on how to stop this from occurring or what may be causing it?

If you've deleted rows that used to have a number, the auto number will then skip the deleted columns and start numbering at the first non deleted row. That's what happened to me at least 😄.

If that happens I'll change the column to text/ number, deleted the numbers, then change it back to auto number.
