Approval Workflow

When an approver receives an email notification for an approval request, can they directly approve or deny the request within the email itself, or must they follow a link to the SmartSheet platform to complete this action? I would expect that approval could be done directly through the email notification. Currently, my notifications are functioning, but I don't see an option to approve or deny within the email.
