Using Check Box Column to Filter in a Row Report

I'm trying to us a checkbox column with a character "-" to filter items out of a report. I use the character with a white font to hide the checkbox when it's not needed in the row. When I select the criteria in the report filter (is not one of, is not equal to, does not contain, ect..) it does not filter the character containing rows out. Any input to help get these items out of my reports?
