Count or Sum by row

I am working on a R, Y, G system (or 1, 2, 3 depending on which formula makes the most sense) by employee… but, I am struggling to figure out how to count the number of reds by row or to sum amounts in multiple columns within the row for some reason. For example, I have values/colors assigned for tenure and pay range columns but cannot get SUM or COUNT to work in order to count what is in those columns for each employee row.

It looks like the formulas outputting the numbers are actually outputting text strings that just look like numbers. If you have quotes around numbers in a formula's output, it will output as text. If you remove those quotes, it will output as numbers and can then be added together the way you are expecting them to.

If this doesn't clear things up, please provide the formulas that are outputting the two numbers you are trying to add together.

Of course! In this visual, I am wanting to add the two yellow columns by row and have the total show in the orange column. The current formula that is giving what is currently shown in the orange column is:

=([Pay Range Penetration Flag]@row + [Tenure Flag]@row)
