Lock single cell

I need people to not be able to change SOME start dates in predecessor columns (to avoid breaking predecessors), while also being able to change the end dates.

A better solution, however, would be to allow us to move the start dates without predecessors breaking and have Smartsheet be able to add in the required lead or lag time to the predecessor column, automatically. But locking cells would be good enough for now.

On the projects I create it is needed to lock cells in this way too. The projects were originally done via Excel, and I had the ability to lock those cells

  • I agree. The ability to lock at the cell level is especially helpful when coordinating across multiple teams. There's less inadvertently changing data, which I find is the most common issue when a sheet is shared across the organization.

Not to be confused with locking a row or column. For sheets that are shared for editing rights but you want to lock a cell after certain criteria is reached - thereby eliminating any possible changes. Especially in fairly large data sheets where an activity log or cell histories would be an astronomical task to ensure that Validated Data has not changed. Example; CFO has approved a value or date and has editing rights but once it is approved, want the value cell to lock. But the column needs to stay unlocked for other editors.

  • This feature has been requested multiple times since 2017. Please look into implementing

I saw some older posts for this but nothing recent. I think it would be helpful to have the ability to lock a single cell from editing.

Currently the only option we have is to lock the entire row. Sometimes, I want people to change a value and have that change other cells and lock the values in after a submittal or an update without locking them out of the main cell they need to change.

If this is implemented I would also like to see this option appear for locking automation as well!

  • I would like the ability to lock not an entire column or row, but just a single cell, and then unlock it when data is added to another cell. The solution could be implemented as a workflow.

That would be a great feature! Some work arounds would include the already mentioned sheet summary- lock that cell. Another would be to Copy the row to a sheet not accessible by those who might change it. You could also use dynamic view to display, but not allow editing of the cell. You can also set automation rules to lock and unlock rows based on certain triggers.

While that doesn't lock a single cell, there are some workarounds to hopefully get close in the meantime.

    Cheers!

  • In my use case, I need to be able to lock single cells after they are populated through an Update Request, because if they change again they'll trigger duplicates of subsequent workflows that should only happen once. I don't think I can lock the whole row because users need to be able to update other fields in later steps.

  • Sorry, but not understanding why this would be difficult to understand. Sheets that replicate what we used to do in Excel/Google Sheets have formulas that users might overwrite. It seems that formula cells should be locked to all but the Owner by default, and other cells by selection. Since the central idea of Smartsheet is collaboration, this is actually very surprising that a) we don't have that capability, b) Smartsheet would ask us to explain why it would be important. I hope this doesn't sound rude, it's just very curious. In Google sheets this is accomplished in 2 clicks.

  • Hello Experts,

Currently, smart sheets providing options to lock rows or columns. However, we also need option to lock at cell level.

  • I want to be able to lock a cell so it can't be edited when specific criteria is met. Example, when the status has been marked as Completed, the completed date cell will then be updated with the current date and then cell should be locked so that it can only be edited by the admin. Currently, we only have the ability to lock an entire row.
