Timeline view - grouping question

Hi all

I have a sheet with two columns I would like to group information by - one is the Project Name, and the other is the Workstream name. Both are dropdown columns. A project may have one or more workstreams, and they will vary project to project. Within each workstream is a series of milestones and other information we are tracking.

When grouping this information in timeline view, it is showing all values for both column despite there being no data for some of the values. E.g. I may have a workstream name value of "X". X only is relevant to Project A. However in timeline view, it is showing "X" under Project B, Project C, Project D etc. This makes it very hard to see just the workstreams related to each project and the information we want to display within each.

What options do I have to have Timeline view only show the relevant values (those with data)? Or is this a current limitation? I can use Calendar view to achieve this however the UX and display in Timeline view is so much better!

Appreciate your help!

It's a limitation. Timeline and Board will group data based on the list of options in a field, whether that option is actually selected in any of your rows or not.

  • I have a similar concern. I only want to show one project but group actions by workstream. The timeline view shows all workstreams regardless if they have data in them or not. It makes the aesthetics displeasing and negates the reason for using this view. I tried to filter to only show actions with data but that doesn't work in timeline view. It will show all workstreams in the dropdown list no matter what filter you apply. @Brian_Richardson, do I need to upvote @Tony.Antonios comment above or how do I get this concern upvoted? Thanks

I’d suggest search for, or open new, a product enhancement request on the product ideas section of Community and get votes for it.
