Has anyone found a good way to visually display daily metrics for the month?

I work in manufacturing and I am trying to build a dashboard for our tiered meetings. I know some people might be familiar with what I am building as it is common in the industry. I have several sheets where Safety incidents and quality incidents etc. can be submitted. My management wants me to build a dashboard that will display metrics in a calendar format (green day for no incidents, yellow for 1, and red for >1). I have data in the sheets and dates when incidents occurred. I just need a way to display them by month on the dashboard. Has anyone found a good way to do this?

The only way I have found to do this would be to build the calendar in a separate sheet and pull in metrics to each day but that would require me to remake the sheet each month. Is there a better way to do this that I am not thinking of?

@aweber Good question. I've done things like this in manufacturing also, but probably not an actual calendar just because it takes up more real estate with less info for the area. I usually do a bar chart with a bar (or line) per month which would communicate the same thing in about 1/5 the real estate. I would also make this a dynamic chart so it changes as the months progress rather than having it static and requiring frequent updates.

  • That's what I have set up right now and my management asked me to change it to the other format. They want to be able to quickly identify which days incidents occurred each month. I'm going to do some more experimenting. Its looking like there is no easy way to do this.
