Data in a Dashboard Graph Aggregated by Year and Month (in correct correct order)

Hi, I am really struggling with this. Like everyone, I have used Excel for years to report on data and it easily recognizes data that is categorized by year and month and displays it on a graph for trend analysis.

I have used the MONTH and YEAR functions to extract the right values and used a summary report to gather the data together. The report shows month and year as shown below:

However, when I graph the data it only shows year! Surely this is a fundamental feature.

Graphing from a grouped report will only pull from the first level of grouping. To get more layers, you will need to use a separate sheet with formulas containing cross sheet references.

Is it possible to get an example of that please?

It seems extremely convoluted for something that should be fundamental to the way Smartsheet is used.
