Adding to dropdown list

I have a dropdown list created, and I have it set to not restrict to the dropdown list only. I would like to know how to easily add values to the dropdown list without having to go into the column properties. Logically I would think if I type in a value in the cell it will add to the dropdown list, but it doesn't work that way.

What work-arounds have you used?

Hello,

At this time, values will only prepopulate the options for a dropdown list if they are present within the column at the time that it is switched to a dropdown list. In order to add additional options after this stage you must edit the column properties.
