I find it's easy to do so.
You can create a reminder when the Due Date is in the past XX days.

Hi All, I agree with Selina. I have several reminders/alerts set up and not 1 uses a formula in a cell. You can set multiple criteria using the automated workflows and you can set it up for a recurrence. See my screen caps.
BTW... you can also set your reminders to be X days BEFORE the due date to try and avoid the miss altogether.
