Automating a Gantt chart from Jira Kanban in early planning
The execs want a Gantt chart from my Kanban board. I will be using the Jira/SmartSheet connector for this task. Here is my current thinking:
- Take the total number of tasks and divide by the available work time to create an average size if the tasks completely fill the time (the SME who will be sizing the items has not been hired yet).
- Plot these end-to-end over the timeline of the Gantt chart.
- Separate tasks by Department (this field has been utilized in Jira) such that each department's first task starts at the same time (project start date)
Is there any way to automate this so I do not have to manually set start and end dates for 361 tasks? Has anyone used another method of providing a Smartsheet Gantt chart from a Jira Kanban board without compromising the Kanban in Jira?

Hello!
If you did not establish Start and End Dates when you created your Issues for your Jira Kanban. There is no way to "automate" this process and you will need to modify them manually. There are a couple ways you can do this.
1. Ensure that you have mapped Start Date and End Date to your Issue Create Screen. You can then manually edit your Issues to establish these dates and map those fields within your workflow to bring them through to your sheet.
2. Ensure that you have mapped Start Date and End Date to your Issue Create Screen. You can then map the date fields within your workflow to bring them through to your sheet. As these are bi-directional, you can update them all from Smartsheet. You will still need to manually set Start and End Dates for each Issue. However, it may prove to be quicker from your sheet.
Adding the Start and End Date fields to your Issues shouldn't compromise your Kanban board. If you find you are unable to add these fields to your Issues, you can still map your Kanban project to Smartsheet and manually create your Start and End Dates for use with your Gantt.

I'll also include the Help Center article for Jira workflows and Field Mapping, should you wish to refer back to it. Just below the Field Mapping section, it goes into Hierarchy, which can be used to assist with grouping by Department https://help.smartsheet.com/articles/2476121-jira-workflows#fieldmapping
