Auto-number on Confirmation Email
We are using a smartsheet form for remote users to report issues with a new Enterprise Resource Planning system. The issue I'm having is that we want to include an auto-number in the form that is visible to the user submitting the issue, so that it can be used as a reference.
How do you do this? The autonumbers only seem to be visible on the smartsheet itelf after the form is submitted, but it is not visible on the confirmation email that users receive if they elect the option to send a themselves a copy of the submission.

PODS,
I think this is likely a chicken and egg thing. The number does not exist until the row is created, so it can't be displayed.
I looked for a work-around for this but could not find one. I tried using a formula but you can't display the results before the row is created either and from the WebForm doc,
- Default Value: will be displayed within the field on the web form, and the form submitter can change it if needed. Formulas aren't allowed as default values.
So changing auto number to a formula (I would have used "=max(column_name:column:name)+1" instead of just last row + 1 to deal with sorted data) won't work.
Seems useful and I'd add my vote for an enhancment request.

Craig is correct, the auto number does not exist until the row is added to the sheet. One option is to use Zapier or Azuqua. Both of these services can send the contents of the row (including the auto number) to an email address added to the form, when the form is submitted.
You could also send the row to the user after they submit the form.
I'll add both your votes for including the auto number in confirmation emails.

I'd also like to have this functionality. Please count my Vote aswell.
And would even go as far to ask for the Number to be calculated for display on the webform iteself.
A fiel instruction could accompany the webform field to state that "The next Record number is X, your record number will be contained in the email to follow"

Christian,
I like when a user explains what they expect!
I hope the developers listen. That's a good suggestion and easy to implement.

I'm glad someone else has the same request I do. I need to be able to utilize this functionality.
If it's not possible to have this number show on the confirmation e-mail, would it be possible to have a "generate" button in the form, where the number is created and filled, before the form is even submitted? This field would always be unalterable to the user.
Cheers,
Gabe.

Please count my vote for this. I don't need the number to appear in the webform itself, but would like it to appear in the confirmation screen the user receives after submission.
Thanks,
Dave

I'd like to continue the appeal for this functionality to be added in future releases. The need just arose for our team using this today.

Votes added, everyone!

I would definitely like my vote added please. Would be very useful for us.

We recently started an enterprise project which requires the users to submit forms that are auto numbered. We are looking to use these numbers as a reference. I found this old thread -
Travis, is there an update on whether this capability has changed since last year or if someone has discovered a workaround? Thank You.
-
Any update on this? I'm also looking to use this number functionality.

Marilyn/Brandon,
Please post an enhancement request here:
https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form?EQBCT=739aa75f30ca43a8a22eb53e4da7d409
These older posts are likely unmonitored. The Community Managers (Travis was one) get promoted and/or move on and whether anyone at Smartsheet catches an update seems to be hit or miss.
There has been no improvement on the Smartsheet side in this area.
Is a simple number enough of, or do you need some pattern of text ("AUT0324", for example)
Depending on your exact requirements and your system, I may have a work-around using Zapier (www.zapier.com). If new rows are always added via a Form, that makes it even easier.

Hi Craig,
I submitted an enhancement request and hope that this one would be accommodated. It seems simple and greatly expands potential use cases for Smartsheet.
I saw the suggestion for Zapier and took my first foray using it to accomplish this and I think that I've got something that will work. Keeping fingers crossed.
Thanks!

Count my vote in on this too. I know this is a few months down the line, so if this has been implemented pleas let me know how I can do this.
In the mean time I will be looking at Zapier
Thanks

My vote too to be added please. Crucial that a user raising a ticket is able to reference a system generated ticket ID - Support team AND users need a common "handle" on issues raised via a support ticket form - especially when there is volume to manage! Please advise as soon as this functionality can be embedded in forms...
Thanks
