Notifications when a date is now in the past

If a date in a cell under a date column is now in the past (i.e. the date hasn't been changed, its just now in the past) if it possible to automate a notification reminder to someone to do something?

All I can see in the notifications capability is the ability to send a notification if a row is actually changed or added.

Hi Chris,

Yes, it is. You can change the Trigger to On a specified date and for example 3 days after and select the Date Field that you want to base the alert from.

Thanks Andree. Do you know if you can do it outside of a trigger on a specified date? Can you trigger on anything that's now in the past?

Yes, you can, but there needs to be something that has changed on the row. The trigger would be row-based, and then you would need to add a condition for a date column and that it should be in the past.

I would suggest a helper checkbox column.

 

=IF(TODAY() > [Date Column Name]@row, 1)

 

This will check the box when the date is in the past. You can then build your Alert off of that. The only catch is... The TODAY() function will only update to the current date when the sheet is activated.
