Projects and Dependencies

Is there a way to use a project sheet (enabled with dependencies) with children/parents to where you can control the formula in the parent rows? I'd like to have the parent row average the % complete column children below it rather than sum but when dependencies are enabled, I get an error message.

Are there any blank children rows? That tends to throw things off with dependencies.
