Shared to me status to Owner status
I am currently "shared to me" access with Smartsheet. I now want to have my own plan and create sheets of my own. When I login I can see the sheets that are shared to me from another owner. Do I use the "create new" tab beside the sheets I can see. Will anyone from the original owner's group be able to see the sheets I create? And when I purchase a basic plan I will have 10 sheets available to me?? Please confirm this information.

The basic plan will allow you to create/own 10 sheets. You are not limited to the number of sheets that can be shared to you.
The sheets that you create/own are not shared to anyone upon creation; unless you are creating a copy from an existing sheet and choose to preserve the sharing from the source sheet.
There are a number of ways to create a new sheet. This help article should help http://help.smartsheet.com/articles/504531-creating-renaming-sheets
