Global update on a specific blank field

We have a "Project Plan" that is replicated throughout all our projects (1,700). We are needing to add a formula to one of the fields (which is blank). Smartsheet is telling us it can't be done.

Has anyone figured out a way to perform a global update on a specific blank field (not the whole column).

The only way I have been able to find is through manual updates. There may be a way using the API, but I am not familiar with that side of things.
