Automatically Populate with the Date

On our project Master Sheet, we have a project status column. When the project status changes to "On Hold", I want the "Date on Hold" column to automatically register the date the project status changes to "On Hold. The current formula I am using is: =IF(["ON HOLD" Stage]1 = "Yes", TODAY()). It will populate today's date - but will update the date every day.
