How do I record the date a comment was added in the row and another date for the comment response?
I want to record two separate date for the comment in Smartsheet. Please see below. Please advise if this is possible.
- the first time a comment conversation is created in a row
- record another date of the comment exchanges.

Will the automation "Record a Date" work?

Hey @Jem Victoria De los Reyes
I believe you can use the record the date automation of the first comment by adding the condition that the [First Comment Date] is blank
Neil's suggestion for capturing multiple dates as a conversation transpires is probably the best one.
If the number of conversational exchanges is limited to only a few, a far less eloquent option would be to have a number of date helper columns and use multiple Record Date automations workflows to record the sequential dates. You would have to continue to make a condition of whatever helper column is blank so that each automation only runs once. Clunky but it might work if it's only a few comments.

I hope you're well and safe!
To add to Neil's and Kelly's excellent advice/answer.
Please have a look at my post below with a method I developed. It will store the time as well.
Yes, I agree, multiple helper columns and a workflow, or multiple workflows with conditions so the date/time would be stored in the correct cell would probably be the best method.
Make sense?

Would that work/help?

Hi Neil,
Thank you for the response. I tried using it, but the Comment start date keeps changing whenever a response to the comment is posted. I was hoping to capture the very first date when the comment started and capture the dates of responses to the comment...

Do you need the dates in the same Smartsheet? If not is Zapier an option to record comments in another sheet?

Hi All,
Thank you so much for all your help! I used a combination of all your solutions. I was able to capture the first date by creating a workflow to record a date with a condition that the comment start date is blank. I then captured the date of the exchange of comments in another column by creating another workflow and using the condition that the comment start date is not blank. Thank you all so much for your help! I really appreciate it.
