Dashboard for all project statuses

Has anyone had luck in creating a dashboard that will count the number of parent rows in a project management sheet? I have several projects listed on a sheet, and I need the dashboard to display how many of those are individual projects-the parent rows. Every time I try it wants to pull in the sub tasks onto my dashboard, but leaders don't need to see that much detail.

create column called Level and use =COUNT(ANCESTORS(Primary@row)) to figure out what level each record is. And then count the zeros with COUNTIFS(Level:Level, 0).
