comments notification email not functioning

My team has been using an automated email to a group of users when certain conditions are not met. When the automation was first created, the users were able to respond via comment, then the assigned person from my team would get an email notification, in addition the notification within SmartSheet. This functionality no longer works. It is curious that it seemed to have occurred around the time of the recent SmartSheet update.

The team has not changed personal notification settings.

We do have a work-around, by choosing the "follow thread" when a new row is added, but this adds an extra step to our process.

I am trying to understand what changed.
