Automation notifications/requests to external/3rd party inquiry

I haven't ventured to using automation with external users/3rd party. Do these individuals need to be shared with the sheet in order to receive notifications/requests of any type? I know internally, individuals do not have to be. Also, I am assuming they don't need a Smartsheet account, either...?
