Conditional Formatting and editing column type

Anyone else frustrated with this? You set a conditional formatting then decide a column needs to change to a different type and it doesn't allow you. Not sure why the conditional formatting is taking precedence over changing a column type. You then have to go find out which condition is causing this. Why doesn't it outline which condition is causing the issue? This is very frustrating and really isn't beneficial in any way. It is time consuming when building new sheets. Not sure when this changed, but it wasn't like this a few months ago.
