Is it possible to use ISTEXT or ISNUMBER with a cell that is the result of a formula?

It appears not, but I'm wondering if there's a work around. I have a column with numbers that sometimes have letters at the end (in which case I need to address and possible remove them). Sometimes there are letters at the beginning of the number in the column, but those are needed so I can't use ISTEXT or ISNUMBER on the whole cell. I can get the last character(s) using a RIGHT formula, but I can't evaluate the resulting value in that cell with ISTEXT or ISNUMBER--it always returns that it is text or isn't a number (presumably because it's looking at the formula itself rather than the resulting value).
