using COUNT or SUM (IF or IFS) for adding values from a multiple-selection drop down

OK let me see if I can explain my question correctly...

I have a field called "remaining work points" (Think Agile/Scrum). I want it to add the number of points by looking in one cell that has multiple drop down selections. This is where I keep the possible types of "installs" that we do on customer sites. Each one would be worth 1 point. I want the REMAINING WORK POINTS field to count the total number of selections in that "type of install" cell. Anyone know what my argument/formula should be here. I tried several COUNTIF formulas all connected by "+" but that only ever returns either a 0 or a 1 no matter how many selections in that cell. Thanks!

Can you describe your process in more detail and maybe share the sheet(s)/copies of the sheet(s) or some screenshots? (Delete/replace any confidential/sensitive information before sharing) That would make it easier to help.
