Colors in Column Charts

I am trying to create different colored columns in my chart, but I'm not getting the option:

... unless I deselect "Switch Rows and Columns," but then I lose the column headers on my chart:

The Help and Learning Center is woefully unhelpful on this question:

That's all good and fine, but is there any way to choose something other than the Default option?

Under Data & Chart Type select Use column names as category labels

Unless I misunderstood it may be that you need to add a column and label your rows as well so it has something to reference under the series portion. If that is the case once you add some labels to your rows and use your first column as series labels then you can turn off the legend so it doesn't show those names on your chart. One of these two options should work
