Is there any risk in removing dropdown list options?

I don't believe there is, but would like confirmation that if we 'clean up' our dropdown list in a column that it will not adversely affect the existing data. When we have added options the message pops up that it will only apply on future data, but I have a lot to remove and want to make sure that is the same. Appreciate the input!

Modifying your dropdown list options will not affect the existing data. Those values will stay whether they're currently listed as options or not.
