Data Mesh "Update Immediately"
Hi there - I'm curious if any one can help explain how Data Mesh's Update Immediately works? Or maybe understand what's happening as it's no longer updating.
In my source sheet: ID (made from auto # feature) then contact info.
In my target sheet: ID & contact info, plus other data columns.
I have my look-up value set to ID, but it's no longer updating the information when it's changed in the Source Sheet. Initially when I set this up a month ago, it would update immediately when the information updating for a contact in the Source Sheet. Now it will only update if I delete the cell link then manually re-run the Data Mesh.
Thanks,
Leslie

I've only used DataMesh in my previous company and don't have access to it now, BUT isn't there a setting to generate new data vs. update existing? What is that set to for you? Could be related to your issue.

Thank for the help @MedaUser
I have it set as update immediately for 'add cell links'. So maybe if the cell link is there then it won't update. Which seems pretty misleading if this is the actual case on how the function runs. Perhaps I should switch it to just add data, and see what happens (But I was avoiding this so it was obvious to the user to not change the data as it will just get erased).

Hopefully I can be helpful, @Leslie Murray! Jury's still out on that one 😊
My understanding is that once the link is establish in the target sheet, then DataMesh is unnecessary at that point. Are your cell links still active/established in the target sheet?
The other option (if I remember correctly) is that you can have DataMesh setup to update existing cells rather than add new cells when data changes. I could be mistaken, but if not, then I'd try switching the setup to that next.

@MedaUser , always helpful to bounce ideas off someone instead of your own head!
So I just got off a help call with Prodesk, and learned:
- Like you said ... Once cell links are established with DataMesh they essentially should be auto update with the source sheet as it's just a cell link. So DataMesh doesn't really do anything once it set's it, but it should be updated immediately.
- There is a bug happening between my source & target sheets so they aren't exactly tying together correctly. The little arrow for "cell link to" doesn't show up on my source sheet, but the target sheet has "cell linked from"
- The cells that were not auto-updating fixed itself by the end of the call by enough refreshing, so not sure how to know it won't get stuck again ....

Wow! This sounds like you posted a trick question to us then! lol. Do I get bonus points for engaging? 😂
Thanks for the info and hope it works out for you! Good luck!

Hello Leslie,
DataMesh is a queued process so there will be times where this is a delay in seeing the changes reflect in your sheets. If this issue is taking an excessive amount of time or not at all please submit a ticket with Smartsheet Support and we'll be glad to help!
If you write into support, I would suggest including the following to expedite the troubleshooting process:
- Screenshots of the DataMesh configuration (at least one example)
- Names of Source and Target sheets being used
- Timeframe for when this issue began
Thank you,
Curtis Lange

Hi Curtis -- do you have any specifics regarding "DataMesh is a queued process"? Do you have some figures or stats? I can only see "operational" in the Smartsheet Status page for Datamesh. It's hard for me to gauge what's excessive as sometimes it goes through, sometimes it takes longer than 10 minutes, and because of this, I worry that there's something else that's wrong. Is it like a workflow automation where it could take up to 15 minutes to kick in? If it's possible that update immediately can take up to 30 minutes, that's ok. I just want to know so I can initiate some workarounds (knowing that it can take up to 30 minutes). Thanks! Ken
