Why sheet viewed - No action taken - but in Activity Log list Formatting Applied, Why?

Hi this can be mis read as action taken. WHEN ONLY SHEET VIEWED. Unless embedded formatting is doing itself (wild guess). Need to understand where/why this line of log came from.

Thanks, Jinwon

    Hello @JinwonK,

Here is an example of conditional formatting I have setup on a sheet. The red box is the icon used to set it up. If you click on the icon, you can view any conditional formatting rules setup on your sheet. Is it possible this is what is showing up on your activity log?

Your wild guess is accurate, as it turns out. :)

Essentially, certain things need to occur on a sheet in order for it to update. Among the list of things… a user must view the sheet.

Read from the bottom up, the log says:
"Jinwon opened this sheet. Cool. Cool. Oh - things have happened that didn't result in the conditional formatting updated. Since Jinwon opened this sheet like I just said… congrats, Jinwon - Smartsheet is crediting you with making all those conditional formatting updates. Huzzah!"

That number is basically how many changes occurred. In @mccullen's screenshot above, note that conditional formatting is set to update the entire row. I generally use conditional formatting on individual cells instead of the whole row - so I'm not sure if the number is how many ROWS, or how many CELLS. I haven't tested it. This is an interesting place for you to explore though - you can probably create a test sheet with very few columns, and apply multiple conditional format rules (some to entire rows and some to individual cells) and then futz with it and see what the results are. I've found that's the best way to answer a question in Smartsheet - jump in with both feet and just start playing. 😀

    Good luck!

On this particular sheet, the conditional formatting is applied based on the Status. The status was changed twice, so the conditional formatting shows "Changed (2)".

Thank you! The sheet does have conditional formatting.

One more Q: "Conditional Formatting Applied (12)," Do you happened to know what is the number 12 denote?

Hi Kerry, I believe you’ve demonstrated “Be generous” trait through SS Community Champion. THANK YOU.

I want to ask, convey Smartsheet for adding some sort of notation for the Activity Log when the log is generated by system. That denote the log resulted from user’s action or resulted of by system.

I think people overrate power of data – Dats show– Data says – like Data is G-d. Well, even G-d makes mistake!

I’ve been there. Wrongfully blamed of data output - Misperceived and misjudged. People give power to data without understanding where it came from. And often accused have NO leverage to prove otherwise.

I trust that you don’t mind me sharing a note that I saved a long time ago (Can’t remember where I got it) …. And it serves me as grounding reminder.

IF we are going to gather more data about our collective lives, we will also need to muster more compassion. What can you do to move us in the right direction?

    • Be discreet. Resist the movement to document every aspect of your work or personal life. There are true advantages to preserving gray areas in which people can let their hair down and relax.
    • Be human. Recognize that humanity is more important than the absolute truth. Use facts to help another improve his or her life, rather than to do something that might destroy their life.
    • Be cautious. Recognize that the "truth" is always subjective. Each of us sees "facts" through a haze of beliefs, attitudes and experiences. No single test can judge the worth or potential of another human being.
    • Be generous. Ask more of yourself. The best skill is bringing out talent in others, so rather than judging others, do your best to help them.

    All the best, Jinwon
