In addition to my original request - it would be even more powerful if there were set formatting templates and the ability to add custom ones… example shading every other row. If someone knows of a way to do that now with conditional formatting please share.
We have been all-in with Smartsheet, but this inability to set basic cell formatting is now driving us away from using Smartsheet because it makes it really difficult to present and read information clearly. Our team is pushing to start using Excel again instead of Smartsheet.
The other thing related to this is that the column widths are constantly changing in Smartsheet, even once set, and even if I'm the only user for the sheet, which is incredibly irritating.
The formatting request also applies to exporting the data into Excel: we should be able to set a format for all our exports, instead of having to do it every time! The column headers come out as size 12 bold, which is unreadable. Every time I export into Excel, I need to change the top line to size 12, aligned to the top, and wrap the text… so annoying.
@Isabelle L - in regards to using Excel for formatting. I wanted to share, just in case you are not already using it; I manage my data tables in Smartsheet then used the Live Data Connector with Excel. This allow me to use Excels features like, finding duplications, cell formatting; and pivot tables and charts. Also I can have several sheets in a single excel workbook. But there is a downside - when I clean up data or do bulk edits I have to manually update the Smartsheet with the changes. :-(
Have a nice day.
Thanks Vanessa. I didn't know about this, I'll investigate, but it still creates a doubling up of work if you then manually have to go back and edit Smartsheet. Thank you for taking the time to share the info, though, I really appreciate it!
This should not even be up for debate. From time-to-time I am floored by the audacity companies have to leave out basic functionality of a tool when they are positioning themselves as competitive. The ability to easily, visually separate data in the standard ways competitor's products do for spreadsheets should not be something the community has to beg for or compromise on… for years. That is, if you actually want people to love and remain loyal to your product.
Here's an opportunity to show the community you actually have their needs and interests in mind with something that should have been available day one.
