Limited view of sheets to external users

Does anyone use SS to ascertain details from team members using webforms but then build that out on the backend? If so, how do you then display only the information you want to team members back out? Ideally, I would like SS to construct a query interface or limited viewing of sheets for external users. It appears to me that the only way to share data is to allow viewing of a spreadsheet but for some of my sheets, I have columns that are not applicable to users or best to not show. Also, it’d be really nice if people could select from drop-down menus in a webform to request data out of SS… similar to the webform submission except in reverse. Are any of these in the process of development or possible now? Am I correct in that none of this is possible as of now?

Thanks!
Lori

You can create reports that show the user what you want them to see.  If they do not need to edit the data then you can published the report as a read only output. If they need to edit the data then then they can edit it through the reports.  Be aware they need to also have editor rights to the sheet to do this.  However you can assign them the rights and not tell them.  This obviously carries some risk.

You may also be able to achieve some of this through Google forms linked to SS as I believe you can edit submitted forms in google but I have not yet tested fully this functionality.

Lori, check out this discussion which provides some suggestions for sharing only part of sheets: https://community.smartsheet.com/discussion/hiding-columns-or-data-certain-users
