I vote remove function to request license, most end users do not need a license. We print some of our Dashboards and the tag line re, unlicensed user is displayed on the printed document and cannot be removed.
"We think it's important to make sure our unlicensed users have a clear path to requesting a license"
Agree. But, what does that have to do with the need to enable admins to manage it?
As mentioned, just produce a dialog when an unlicensed user is trying to do something that requires a license.
The way it is now, is, well, just stupid. It's a clear attempt by Smartsheet to increase the number of licenses, regardless of whether they are needed.
@Frank Jelenko, you nailed it. Your proposed solution is far more effective.
Smartsheet; your account admins are frustrated. I spend ~2 hours/week deflecting license requests that are not truly required because your messaging below is misleading. It's borderline phishing IMO.
It's frustrating, we get tickets in our company on this on a regular basis as admins. Bottom line for us - users do not get a license because they can literally do what ever they want. Make hidden workspaces, reference from these hidden items, setup random permissions outside of your organization. Until Smartsheet implements granular permissions/controls on what a licensed user can do, not giving them a license is the only control as an admin you have in your Smartsheet tenant. Until then, this comment and this request will slowly fade in to the background like all of our other enhancement requests. See you all at the next anniversary of this request.
In an Enterprise/Advance setting, granting licenses is not a personal decision. Often many users are added to the corporate Smartsheet account without a need for licenses because they are required to work in a Smartsheet based solution. This setting is what accounts without license are meant for.
Currently unlicensed users logged into a corporate Smartsheet account see this very prominent in every sheet they work in:
This creates a lot of unwanted license requests (aka workload) for the Smartsheet admins.
Please allow Smartsheet admins to hide these visuals for unlicensed users in an Enterprise account.
Smartsheet Consulting, Solution Building, Training and Support.
Projects for Processes and for People.
If I register with unlicensed users to this forum and vote multiple times for this request, it's a proper way to show that this is not the correct way for marketing ?
I agree with all previous comments. These are all valid comments and a source major pain points.
Please remove the Request License "feature".
Has anyone received a response from SS on this request?
The only response we have seen in the last few months was a note from SS stating "We think it's important to make sure our unlicensed users have a clear path to requesting a license", which is a total BS answer that they are trying to drum up business in a way that bypasses Enterprise licensing policies and is causing bad will with all of us admins who now have to have discussions with end users that we shouldn't need to have. We don't have these discussions with our O365 or other cloud-based users concerning their licensing plans.
Agree with all comments above!
I agree with this. Most of our users do NOT need a full license. I understand the profit perspective for SS, and go ahead and leave it on by default. I don't mind flipping a toggle to turn off the "nag" banners for my users. But every time I share a sheet out, even to a user that will never do anything but view the artifact, they click on the request a license button that you so prominently display. I waste time disapproving the request, they keep seeing the nag screen, and as someone else mentioned, some users get upset that we don't issue them a license they don't need because they look at it as if we are keeping them from capabilities that we know they don't need.
I fully understand who needs a license and who doesn't, making me decline every single request is a waste of my time and theirs.
This is total nonsense, it is absolutely necessary to be able to block license applications because we work with externals and I do not want to waste my time explaining to everyone why they do not have a license.
This is surely a marketing trick for you but a very big problem for us to manage.
I fully support this request! Many of our internal users don't understand all they can do with a free license vs. paid.
As a workaround to receiving many license requests, I configured a custom "License Request Screen" which directs users to a SharePoint page. On this page we explain the difference between a paid and free license... essentially trying to down-sell our users on the fact they don't need a paid license.
I agree with the other posters to remove the "request full license" hyperlink. It's pretty clear to corporate users that if they want a license for software they need to request it from their IT department. They can do that by email and don't need to go through Smartsheet to do so.
Another downside to this messaging is that when presenting a sheet to a customer, it gives the perception that you're using less-than-full-featured free software and are too cheap to pay for a license (which they may not realize isn't necessary).
This is a big issue for my company as well. Most users don't need a license, and the automatic requests are wasteful and confusing.
Every time I go into a new sheet or click back into an existing, this pop up always comes up and I cannot click anything else in the sheet until I "X" out of the Request License. It is causing smart sheet not to be streamlined and is extremely frustrating to have to close out of this popup literally hundreds of times a day. If there could be a way to disable this, it would be extremely helpful. Thank you!
