How do you run schedule so it shows progress?

I am placing % complete and it's not running schedule

Are you talking about visualizing the % complete on the Gantt (red). If you right click any column header, or if you are in Gantt, select the Project Settings (green), and then you can select which column to use to show % complete.

If you're talking about rolling weighted % complete up to a parent row, you must select "dependencies enabled" in the project settings window. FYI if you do this, it does to weighted averages based upon the task durations, as below.
