How to add additional information after a form is submitted?

We use forms to create project requests, and we know each form is submitted and creates a new row in the underlying sheet. We have 6 unique forms tied to one "project type" sheet (x3 project types). The forms are super intricate and logical, and the sheet has a ton of automations and workflows to it. Our executives want to know if it's possible to for someone submitting a form to then add more info to the same project (row) as information is gathered later? The submitters would not be active Smartsheet users but rather our field guys submitting a form via distributed URL, so they can't just edit the sheet.

First thought: create a generic "preliminary" form which would eventually be married to the more detailed entry that comes later, but I don't know how to link the two so our operations team (the ones behind the sheet) know they are the same project.

Second thought: add information via comments but again, those submitting the forms are not Smartsheet users. Reply to 'alert someone' notification email?

Maybe you could use Update Requests.

When a form is submitted, send an update request to the submitter with the columns they will need to fill in later. If they might need to provide more information over time, perhaps you could trigger Update Requests to them on a regular time interval until all information is provided for that row.
