Automation in Template not Working

I have a template that has an automation that moves rows at a certain time of day to another sheet. When certain users create a sheet using the template the automation is unable to run. with the error "unknown destination". I need some help. Do all users need access to the destination sheet as well? I want to avoid that.

The condition for the Move Rows action to work is that the creator of the workflow (in your case, the owner of the copy of the sheet/Template) must have at least Admin permissions on both the source and destination sheets. You can find more information here:

Copy rows has the same error. In the automation instead of the destination sheet, I have the "Unknown Destination" message.

Hey @Isaac A., thanks for the suggestion. I am the admin and creator of both the template and the destination. The only thing I can think of is the smartsheet I based the template on is not in the same workspace as the template and the destination. Moving them over now and recreating the templates to see if that fixes the issue.

If someone else uses your template and makes a copy of it, they then become the owner of that copy. The automation will copy, but if the person copying your template does not have permission to the destination sheet that the automation is pointing at…then the automation will fail. They need permission to that sheet, or you need to take ownership of the copy.

One way you can work around this, if say you're trying to pick up rows from copied templates without having to grant everyone access to the destination, would be to use a report and Data Mesh. If you setup a report that uses a workspace as a source, and have everyone copy into that workspace, you can then setup Data Mesh to read that report and "Copy and Add" the data into a sheet for you. This relies on unique identifiers, so you'll want a column on your template that uses some combination of text and numbers to guarantee unique identifiers on each row across all your copies. Something like Project Name+Autonumber.
