Import data directly into existing sheets in table view

We've all been there — you have a spreadsheet full of data sitting on your desktop, and you need it in Smartsheet. Until now, importing a file meant reverting back to grid view. Now you can stay right in table view and import your data without ever leaving the view you're working in.

Now you can import CSV, XLS, and XLSX files straight into an existing sheet in table view. Just click (⋮) next to your sheet name, pick your file, choose your column types, and you're done. It supports files up to 50MB with up to 20,000 rows and 400 columns, so it handles substantial datasets too.

It's designed to be fast — whether you're spinning up a new project, populating a template, or just getting started with Smartsheet for the first time. There's a warning on the help doc:
"If your sheet already contains data, importing a file overwrites the existing data in the sheet."

Am I understanding correctly that this is for populating NEW, EMPTY sheets only? So this update doesn't mean we can append more data into a sheet already in use. We still have to import into a blank dummy sheet, move rows into the useful sheet, then delete the dummy sheet.

Do we have a timeline when we will be able to import for larger capacity without having to ask for a sheet to be enabled?

Importing into an existing sheet, that already has data in it, is coming in the next phase. You will be able to grow a data set over time using the import function, once that feature releases.

Importing over the original 20k row limit is also in the works. Over the next few months the team are working on supporting large sheets, so you can import your bigger data sets in one go.

This "Importing into an existing sheet" is a feature that should have been Smartsheets Topmost Priority released long ago due to it being a vital necessity within your standard / basic software tools when asking people to leave Excel or other softwares for Smartsheets (yours).

When you say "next phase" is that years out? Not trying to be rude/mean about this, but when Smartsheets states "this will be in our next phase / rollout / release / etc.." in other past forum topics, take so long to release, that those of us who follow those specific topics (like this topic - Importing into an existing sheet) forget why we followed it to begin with.

So @Galina Jordanowa do you happen to have a definitive release date (or a rough date) for that next release or should i look forward to this in 2027?

This isn't years away — it's on the roadmap for this year. Right now, our priority is bringing the Grid view import experience to full parity with Table view. Once we get there, we'll be building on that foundation with brand new features. In the meantime, Data Shuttle already solves this use case today.
