Automate Notification

I am trying to find a way to use the DONE checkbox to then notify the dependent task assignment that it is ready to launch.

I have looked for solutions and come up with the idea of having a handoff column, but then that is just putting the same information twice in the sheet.

What I am wondering is if there is a way to create a formula whereby the DONE check on one row would then church an ACTIVE or RUN check box on the dependent row. Then I could setup a notification that when ACTIVE is checked to notify the assignee for that row... in other words to just check DONE would have an embedded formula.

Has anyone done this?

This is not currently possible. It would be nice if this functionality was possible, or if a contact column could take a formula that would enter the user information from the following row, or any cell identified, alas, contact columns cannot accomplish that at this time. The only way we've been able to do this is to create that handoff column and manually re-enter the person who is to get the next task. Sorry for bearing bad news.
