Barcode scan and update columns on line

Is it possible to scan a barcode-find the line where the barcode is already on and then put a check mark in to update the status of the line? 

Basically I am scanning a a product into the Smartsheet. It will create a line in Smartsheet that has the barcode scan and then a date. Later in the process I will be scanning the barcode again and would like to automatically update the status as consumed. Either with a check box or a date. After a while I will be scanning the barcode again as it leaves the building. It will also need to update the line with a checkbox or a date.

Does this sound like it is possible in smartsheet and how would I go about creating this?

Hi Luke,

You would use search to look up the product with the help of the barcode, and then you can update it.

Would there be a way to automatically update a column on the line. Lets say with a checkmark or adding the scan date?

For example. We receive a part in for maintenance. I scan the barcode and it creates a new line in smartsheet with the barcode and the date. Then when that part gets installed I want to scan it again and put the new date in. I would also want to scan the barcode again and place a date, once that part breaks and needs to be replaced. This would all be on one line in smartsheet. Dependent on the barcode.

Yes, that will work, but you will have to search for the part (barcode number) and then update the information manually.

@Andrée Starå I know this is old so there may be a new and improved process but if not, can you send me the smartsheet barcode template? I need help getting this exact sheet set up as Luke describes.
