Problem sorting report based on "Assigned to" (Contact List)

I am working on producing a report which pulls from a Task sheet (database) based on certain specific tasks and specific statuses.  Each task has an "Assigned to" cell which contains a restricted list of contacts (our employees).  

I have been asked to sort the resulting report by the "Assigned to" column first, and then by "status."

When I first created the report, I noticed that despite being the first sort, the "Assigned to" column was not sorted correctly.  One employee's tasks were intermingled in the midst of another employee's tasks.

I've tried ascending and descending orders, and it doesn't seem to matter - the tasks are jumbled at best.

Any thoughts or advice?

Does anyone know if this is being resolved?  We're having the exact same issue with sorting reports by assignee and also with assigning by contact list in anything but the our main project sheet (i.e - calendar view, search=>edit view). Seems to be an issue with contacts?

Problem still exists as of May 22, 2019. Seems like a fairly basic problem and simple fix. Does not speak highly of the support for the product.

I also need this problem resolved.  I cannot sort by "Assigned To" in a report.  It is not functioning.

As a possible workaround, you could add a helper column that shows the values in the Contact column with something like the below example and then sort that column instead.

=Contacts@row

Would that work?

Yes, thanks. That is what I did to get around this. Workarounds are great (and very necessary with Smartsheet) but it's a shame the basic functionality doesn't work in better in the product. Thank you for your help!
