Cannot parse the Hyperlink function, unfriendly hyperlink import

OK, so the only way I have found to import a hyperlink is to do a lengthy workaround.

When creating spreadsheets with lots of hyperlinks based off of a reference number, I use the hyperlink function to generate the links to URL by putting in the =HYPERLINK(domain, number) formula.  This is way better than manually generating hundreds of hyperlinks.

The problem comes if I try importing a cell from Excel that has a hyperlink in it that was put there by a formula like this: =HYPERLINK("http://websitetestnumber=41058","41058").  What I see in SS is that it is #unparseable :(

Can this feature be added to SS, so that the native feature within Excel can be done?

Thanks,

Brad

    +1

(is there any workaround that anyone's figured out?)

The url im trying to link to is "url"&Cell1" where the value of an adjacent cell is appended onto the base url. in excel if the value was in cell A1 this would be =hyperlink(http://www.google.co.uk/?q="&A1) which would autofill to =hyperlink(http://www.google.co.uk/?q="&A2 ) and so on.

  • It's been over (2) years on this one and I still don't see this functionality. What is the status? It would add tremendous functionality for our use at my company.

As a new user it is a little disconcerting that this functionality is not implemented yet. Is there any reason it is not?

  • Is there a work around to this? Please help.

I have an Excel SS with 1,000s of rows of data each with a hyperlink (with freindly name) that has been created in excel using the =HYPERLINK formula that I need to import into SmartSheet and have the hyperlink preserved.

A native hyperlink with http://xxxx.xxx will work

However any hyperlink created via Excel's Formula result in no link.

Please add this feature. The LINK is available in Smartsheet cell by cell but we need:

    a) ability to import on bulk from Excel

    b) and/or ability to generate hyperlinks via a formula/function.

When can we expect to see this in Smartsheet?

There is a workaround to this.

If starting with a new Smartsheet:

    1. Create your spreadsheet in Excel with all of the correct friendly hyperlinks.  Save but don't close it.

    2. Do a 'Save As' and save the excel sheet as an html file.

    3. Navigate to the folder with the html file and open it in your web browser.

    4. Do a copy all from the web browser page.

    5. Open a new blank spreadsheet and paste in what you just copied.

    6. Save that new spreadsheet as you would normally.

    7. Import that new spreadsheet into Smartsheet as you would normally.

Now all of your hyperlinks are of the friendly type and your sheet is good to go.

If starting using an existing Smartsheet or template:

    Add in the following steps

1a.  Ensure that your column headers exactly match the sheet you will be adding the new rows to.

    8.  Move the rows from your newly imported sheet into the sheets where you need them.
