The light gray is difficult for me to see.

Me too. I also tend to work in low light, so that makes it worse.
What I do is create a RowID column and populate row 2 with
=[RowID]1 +1
and copy that formula to the rest of the column.
I then make the font bigger and bolder to see it easier.
I need to update the column formula if I have moved rows around, but small price to pay for the convenience while I am building Predecessors, for example.
