Can a cell be linked to multiple rows simultaneously?

Hi,

I want to link a cell value to multiple rows of another sheet.

I tried copying the source cell, highlighting multiple cells in another sheet and tried Paste special - Link to copied cell.  However it only assigns the value and links to the first cell alone !!

Any help or direction is highly appreciated.

I think you would need to concatenate or do the math in the source sheet, and then link to that cell on the source sheet.  You could do this in a hidded column on the source sheet and then it looks to come over to the target sheet magically and everyone goes wow, you get kudos and everyone is happy.

  • @Brett, I didn't quite understand.  Probably because I didn't give an example.

Suppose I have a sheet for Employees and another one for Tasks.

In Employee shee I have 'Brett Evans'  and in the Tasks sheet I've a column 'Assigned to' and I want to assign / link 'Brett Evans' to multiple rows of 'Assigned To' column.

I think the most effective way to accomplish this specific goal in Smartsheet is to make sure Assigned To is a column type "Contact List".    That will look up to anyone the sheet has been shared with, along with the rest of your company contacts.

  • The issue is assignment. I may have to assign 50 rows to Brett and it's painstacking if I've to do it one at a time.  And assigning name was just an example.  The requirement I have is to assign a unique ID from sheet 1 to sheet 2.

Thanks for your comments & suggestions.

Happy to suggest options.  If you fully describe the problem you are trying to solve and/or publish examples of the sheets you're using, with all sensitive info removed, I can be more helpful.

  • Sheet 1 is a list of Accounts.  One of the column in the list is 'Account Number' (alphanumeric).

Sheet 2 is a list of Transactions.  One of the column in this list is the 'Account Number' associated with the specific transaction.

Now I would have added (copied / pasted) some 50 transactions into this sheet 2 associated with an account.  Now I want to create a cell link between the 'Account Number' from Sheet 1 to all these 50 lines in Sheet 2.

Current option is create a link cell by cell 50 times.  Which is not viable.  I'm looking for a way to create the link in 1 go.  Like select that 50 cells and 'somehow paste' the cell link.

    Does that help?

Cell link to the top cell then put formula in second cell  =First Cell Absolute it cand copy down to the remining rows.

  • Hi James,

What do you mean by 'Absolute It'?

    Thanks
