Auto populating status

I've created a new smartsheet to track submissions we're making to an outside authority and what stage the are at. I have a new line for each submission then a column for date the submission prep started, when it was submitted, when it was validated and finally approved.

I'd like to have a column right at the beginning that automatically said what the current status of the submission was. So, if the "Date In Prep" column had a date in it but the rest were blank then the status column would say "In Prep", or maybe have a colour symbol. Then if the "Date Submitted" column was filled in, the status would automatically change to "Submitted".

Is that possible?

Would you consider using a form for data entry? If so, you can set a default status on Submit.

You can add a default value to the form and hide it if you don’t need to see it.
