Im looking for a formula that will allow me to index down through a number of children and count the number of decendents under that child.
Any help?
Hi. You can use the CHILDREN function with the COUNT function to count the descendants under the children. Your formula will look like this:
=COUNT(CHILDREN(reference)) where reference is a cell in a Child row.
With this formula used in a child row, you are counting the children of the children, or the descendants.

Ah yes.... but I want to do it from the parent row.
I want to use the INDEX function to move down to a particular child row and count it's children.
what I'm thinking is "go to the third child" INDEX(CHILDREN(),3) .....and then count and return the number of children or dependents under that child.
I could just put a dependent count in each child cell and then index that child cell to return its contents. but I'm using that cell to hold a different value.
So I'm still digging through this one, and I think it just comes down to that I need a function that can return a cell's address (row, column) - and it doesn't look like Smartsheet can do that. I can do a range and return the associated location within the range, but I can't get it to give me the raw position in the sheet.
Oh well - as much as I hate doing things with hidden columns, it becomes a simple problem with it.
Many thanks for your help. If something else pops into your head, shout it out.
Cheers
Are you able to provide some screenshots to go along with your post?
Hi,
How would you like to use it? What's your use case?
Can you describe your process in more detail and maybe share the sheet(s) or some screenshots? (Delete/replace any confidential/sensitive information before sharing) That would make it easier to help. (share too, andree@getdone.se)
Have a fantastic weekend!
